There are only three steps to your goal. That’s it. The brain tends to come up with all kinds of complicated obstacles. It can be simple. I’ll show you how.

Consider your big goal. Take a moment, think about it, and let it sink in. What’s your big goal? Would you like to make it happen? Let’s get started with those three steps to your goal!

The three steps to your goal are:

  • Get clear on what you want.
  • Make a plan.
  • Follow through with the plan.

This is the very simple version. There are crucial details for each step. Most importantly, the brain is at the core of everything. Now that you have the general idea (and are possibly thinking “Obviously!”) I’m going to give you the details.

Step #1 of three steps to your goal: Get clear on what you want.

Before you put in all the time and effort, make sure it’s what YOU really want. Is this a goal because you’re feeling it deep within your core? Are you thinking this is the path you “should” take because that’s what you’re “supposed” to do? There’s a very big difference.

If your whole being isn’t in it, you could probably get there (or close) but you would be working against a lot of resistance. Is it worth it? Maybe, but you can make that decision knowingly. Maybe your goal is to get a job. Your heart isn’t really in it, but you need that income now to fuel your life and dreams. Okay, that’s sometimes a good plan, as long as you’re honest with yourself.

If your goal isn’t that deep, core goal, then it’s not your goal.

It can be part of the process, but it doesn’t belong as the big, real goal. What is your core goal? Get clear on that and you’re ready to move on to the next step. This is where the brain comes in.

It’s common to have blocks preventing us from seeing that core goal. Sometimes it takes years to get that clarity. Don’t spend years getting there. Optimize your brain and you can get clear right away. The brain essentially allows you to skip ahead.

Step #2 of three steps to your goal: Make a plan.

Once you’re clear on your goal you can make a plan to get there. It’s probably going to feel daunting or overwhelming at first. If it doesn’t, are you aiming too low? Check to make sure.

If it seems huge, great! That means you’re stretching yourself. Growth happens when you go after big things, and that’s perfect.

Think about all the things you need to do to reach your goal. Break it all down. Your brain will come up with all kinds of reasons it will not work. This is really helpful – it tells you all the things you need to work on to get there. Plan it all out until you feel like the first few actions are realistic.

Can you tell where the brain comes in at this step? Instead of considering all those thoughts to be factual reasons to keep you from reaching your goal, you’re shifting them. Use everything your brain offers as an opportunity to grow into the person who can reach that goal.

Pro tip: Don’t worry about all the details through the end of the process.

Instead, focus on the big-picture plans all the way through plus the details in the earliest phase. This will prevent wasted time and overwhelm. You can work on the later details as you get closer.

Step #3 of three steps to your goal: Follow through with the plan.

You guessed it – you actually have to do the things! That goal is never going to happen if you don’t start moving toward it. If you feel completely stalled and not ready to follow through, go back to your plan and refine it. Make the initial details and action steps even smaller. Also, sometimes you need to just start before you feel ready.

Create habits and routines that support your big goal. What kind of life do you need to live to be able to follow through with your plan? Live that life. Be consistent.

When things get challenging (because they will get challenging if you’re aiming high enough), reset. Remind yourself why this is important. Consider what you can adjust to help yourself. What can you do differently to be able to follow through? Does the plan need to be adjusted?

Keep going, and find new ways, until that goal is your reality.
