Life presents us with so, so many opportunities for growth. They’re not all fun. Some of them are really rough during parts of the growth phase and then wonderful during other parts. We may feel a mix of excitement, frustration, and other things. Other growth opportunities could just completely suck. They may even make us want to stay put and forego the growth. That’s okay. It’s completely normal to not like everything life throws our way.

Let’s talk about a few different types of opportunities for growth.

Education or Career Change

Additional education and career opportunities are opportunities for growth. They tend to bring a mix of emotions, like fear, doubt, excitement, pride, and more. These are usually easier to recognize as growth opportunities.

The purpose of education is to learn and grow. Promotional career changes are also easy to recognize as growth opportunities. However, what about lateral changes, demotion changes, or changes to a different field that are more difficult to assess?

We can view these as opportunities for growth, too!

Changing to a new field takes learning, which is growth. A lateral or demotion change can still be something different, which would be an opportunity for growth. Even if it is something that has been done before, it could be done in a different way or present new challenges.

Sometimes you have to dig for opportunities for growth… and that’s okay.

Trying Something New

By definition, trying something new is a growth opportunity. It’s learning. This tends to be a lot easier when it’s something you really want to try. It’s still possible to make it enjoyable if it’s not your first choice. The process can be fun, and the end result can be worth the effort.

Trying something new is what you make of it. So much of it is within the brain. The good news is that you have control over your thoughts. You get to choose how you think about trying something new.

Medical Condition or Injury

Health stuff happens. It can be scary and painful. Beyond that, it can completely derail plans and goals. Also, it can be an opportunity to shift and overcome. Here me out on this one.

I have experienced my fair share of injuries and health challenges. They’re rough, and I’m not too happy about them when they happen. However, without them, I may still be working a job that doesn’t suit me.

This career that gives my life so much joy and meaning is happening now because I experienced injury and medical issues. Finding ways to heal and overcome against the odds, led me here. How can those not be opportunities?

Life Events Outside Our Control

This one is similar to injuries and medical conditions. Despite trying, we can’t possibly control everything that happens to us. We can prevent or promote, make decisions, and tip the scales in favor of what we want. Even so, it may not work out as planned no matter how much effort we put in.

That’s part of life. The best thing we can do for ourselves and the people around us is to recognize what is within our control and what is not. Then, it is important to let go of what is outside our control enough that we can welcome peace within ourselves.

Empathy as an Opportunity for Growth

Sometimes we can feel deeply for others, almost as if we really were in their shoes. It’s an amazing skill. The world needs the wonderful empaths. Also, it can be painful and draining. It’s okay to learn how to take a break from empathy. It can be replaced with compassion.

This is an opportunity for growth, learning how to step aside and show up in a different way.

That doesn’t mean you need to stop being who you are or completely quit empathy. However, you can learn to recognize when it is too much for you before it becomes too much. Then, you can choose how you want to show up at any given moment.

Opportunities for Growth are Everywhere

There are opportunities for growth all over the place. Sometimes they’re hiding, and that’s okay. Those are typically the most rewarding in the long run. We get to choose if we want to find and use the opportunities in every situation. Managing the brain around this one outlook has the power to completely change your life.
